| You
may have noticed the small orange ‘RSS’
button on the News and Blog pages of our website.
Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is a new way
to distribute the key content of websites (headlines,
news, summaries and links) directly to your computer
desktop - without you having to actually visit
the sites.
This way you can view hundreds of headlines from
multiple sites all in one place and saves you
a huge amount of time going from site to site.
For example, have a look at the BBC website where
you will see the orange RSS feed button for the
content of many of their pages.
To access and read the content of RSS feeds,
all you need to do is download a ‘news reader’
that displays the content from the websites you
choose.
After installing your news reader, you can then
add the content from each feed by clicking on
the orange RSS button on your chosen websites.
After clicking on the button, cut and paste the
URL address of that feed into your news reader.
You will now be subscribing to the feed, and each
time that page is updated (e.g. a new news item
or blog), you will see it appear in your news
reader.
The BBC is a great example of how RSS feeds are
used to distribute the content of their web pages.
In fact you can choose from almost 30 feeds on
the BBC website at

IFAOnline also has a feed to which you can subscribe
and increasingly you will see the orange RSS or
'Atom' button appearing on many of your favourite
websites. By clicking on the RSS button on your
chosen web pages, and then cutting and pasting
the URL into your newsreader the key headlines
from those websites will magically appear in your
news reader. In this way, you can receive just
the key bits of your favourite websites all in
one place, and without having to visit each page.
