What is The Institute of Financial Planning

The Institute of Financial Planning is the UK professional body of those committed to the development of the multi-discipline profession of Financial Planning.

We constantly work with members of the public, Financial Planners and Members of the Institute to achieve recognition for the Financial Planning profession.

How can we help you?

The Institute of Financial Planning can help you understand more about how comprehensive Financial Planning differs from the more product orientated broking service.

We can also help members of the public search for a qualified Financial Planner to assist them in organising their personal or corporate financial affairs to more readily achieve their goals.

We provide both Institute Members and non-Members with an extensive programme of training courses, seminars and events to assist you in understanding more about the benefits of comprehensive Financial Planning and ultimately gaining Certified Financial Planner licensee status.

What is the CFP Licence?

The CFP Licence is an internationally recognised qualification, which assesses the financial planner’s ability to apply their technical knowledge and put it into practice when dealing with clients. It teaches and tests an individual’s ability to deliver a comprehensive financial planning service. This encompasses building a long-term relationship with a client and gaining their trust in providing an objective high quality and well-communicated plan. The CFP Licence helps planners to offer this comprehensive, integrated service, which is centred on helping their clients achieve their goals and objectives and is fully discernible to financial advisers who simply “sell products”.

The CFP is no ordinary qualification. “Licence” being the important word – it must be reapplied for each year and renewal is conditional upon the ethical and educational requirements having been met. Licence holders must sign up to the Code of Ethics, declare any complaints and maintain a regime of CPD of 30 hours a year. The combination of the 4 Es (Examination, Experience, Ethics and ongoing Education) is what demonstrates a professional, not exams alone.
There are currently just under 500 CFP Professionals in the UK and around 95,000 worldwide.

Benefits of the CFP Licence

  • International accreditation – the qualification is recognised internationally as the highest standard of excellence for the provision of comprehensive financial planning services.
  • Promotion to the public as the best financial planners in the industry – this is done through press releases and providing a registry of CFP Licensees to members of the public (we receive about 3 requests a day on average to send out these registries)
  • Association with the top 2% of the financial market place.
  • Differentiation in the marketplace – the opportunity to stand out as a firm that is committed to educating their advisers to the highest possible standard and is dedicated to providing a service to clients that is unrivalled.
  • Increase in productivity – two leading national firms who have committed to the CFP Licence have stated that financial planning revenue has increased by 20% and 25% respectively in the last 12 months as a result of their advisers being more organised and having the confidence to start using the skills that have been tested during the CFP process.
